Drive Traffic to Older Blog Content for Free with the Revive Old Post Plugin

Formerly known as Tweet Old Post, the free Revive Old Posts plugin from Revive.Social is an excellent tool to help you maximize the value of your older blog content, giving those long-forgotten posts a new lease of life and turning them into a whole new source of traffic for your website.

In this guide, we’ll show you just how easy it is to set up, configure, and use the plugin to automatically post your content to Facebook and Twitter. We’ll talk you step by step through the entire process and even discuss the benefits of upgrading to the premium version of the plugin, which currently costs between $79 – $299 depending on which license you buy.

Before we do that, however, let’s quickly discuss why tools like Revive Old Post are such a good idea.

Why Bother Sharing Your Old Content?

Time and time again, we’re told what a game-changer social media can be for driving traffic to our websites. After search engines themselves, social media is the biggest source of traffic for the majority of websites.

Yet to use it effectively, you often need a regular stream of fresh content.

Maybe you publish a new post on Monday, share it a few times of the course of the week, and then, by Friday, that post is largely forgotten about save for any traffic you might get from Google. You repeat the whole process the following Monday, and on and on it goes until you have a huge backlog of posts that you’re no longer using to generate traffic even though you probably spent hours creating them.

Revive Old Posts changes all that. As you’ll see in the walkthrough below, you simply install the plugin, connect it to your social media accounts, and then let it do its thing, going through your older content and sharing them at regular intervals.

Of course, this works much better for evergreen content than time-sensitive material, but the creators of this handy tool have thought of that too, giving the option to omit certain types of content based on tags or categories.

When you’re done, those posts that previously weren’t doing much for you will come back to life and start driving traffic to your website once again.

Here’s how it works:

1. Install Revive Old Posts

Installing Revive Old Posts uses the same easy process that you’d follow for installing all types of plugins.

You can either download it directly from the WordPress Plugins Directory then upload it either via FTP or the WordPress plugins dashboard, or you can go to Plugins – Add New from your dashboard menu and search for ‘Revive Old Posts.’

If you take that option, the plugin we’re using today should be the first search result with 40,000+ active installations.

Simply click install and activate, and you’re good to go.

2. Connect Your Social Media Accounts

Once installed, the free version of Revive Old Posts allows you to share your older content via Facebook and Twitter.

There is an option to share to other social networks such as Pinterest and Linkedin, you can do that by upgrading to the pro version which we’ll discuss in more detail later in this guide.

For now, let’s get your Facebook and Twitter accounts hooked up.

To do this, first, find the Revive Old Posts tab in your main menu and select the dashboard. This brings up the main menu for connecting your socials to your account.

Connecting Facebook

Click the Facebook icon and follow the instructions to connect to your Facebook account by entering your login credentials. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be presented with a list of any and all Facebook pages that you’re an owner, administrator, or editor for.

Select the page you want to post to, give the plugin permission to post content on that page and you’re done.

Next, simply do the same for Twitter. Click the button, add your credentials, and link the two together.

3. Edit Your Sharing Settings

After connecting your socials, head to the General Settings tab to configure how the plugin will share your old content.

Your options here include:

Minimal Interval Between Shares

How long after sharing an old post do you want the plugin to wait before it shares another? As you’ll see in the image above, we’ve scheduled an old post to be shared every 10 hours, but you can opt for a much shorter or longer interval if you prefer.

Minimum Post Age

What exactly counts as an old post anyway? We’ve decided that the plugin should only share posts that are at least 30 days old, though again you can change this to whatever works for you.

Maximum Post Age

Does your blog stretch back several years? Could some of those earliest posts be so old that the information is outdated and no longer relevant? If so, you can use this option to tell Revive Old Posts not to share posts that are older than say 1,000 days (almost 3 years) to ensure that you’re only sharing relevant content.

Number of Posts

This determines how many posts the plugin will share on each account every time it shares. If you ask us, once is enough, though you may have a legitimate reason for sharing 2,3 or 4 posts per share.

Share More Than Once

Leave this option checked if you want to Revive Old Posts to continue sharing content in a loop. In other words, after the plugin has shared every available post, it will simply go back to the beginning and start again.

If you’d rather just share each post one time only, uncheck the box.

4. Configure Taxonomies

Although it’s an optional feature, the taxonomies option on the General Settings page could prove very useful if there were certain posts you didn’t want to share.

Let’s say, for example, that you once wrote a bunch of topical news posts about a major event that happened a few years ago and used a specific WordPress tag or category for all those posts. Years down the line, you decide those posts no longer offer anything of value to your current audience, so you want to leave them out.

This option will allow you to do that by selecting that tag or category from the dropdown menu and clicking exclude.

Alternatively, it may be that you only want to repost content from certain tags. In that case, just select them from the menu to ensure that it’s only those posts that get shared.

5. Finish Configuring Settings

After you’re done with the taxonomies, there are just a few more settings that you should take a look at:

Google Analytics Tracking

This feature adds UTM query tags to your post URLs so that you can see how well Revive Old Posts is working for you by tracking the traffic you get from the posts it shares.

Instant Sharing

Leave this option checked, and when you go to publish a new post, you’ll be able to choose to have Revive Old Posts share it to your social media accounts right away. By default, this option is left unchecked, but you can always check the Enable Instant Sharing by Default option so that your posts automatically go out without you having to select anything.

6. Configure Your Post Formats

Next, click the Post Format tab to change up how your posts will look when published on your social media accounts.

This incredibly useful for making your WordPress content more sharable on Twitter while at the same ensuring it still looks good when posted to your Facebook page.

Personally, we made very little changes here. For Facebook, we changed the first option labeled Share Content from “Post Title” to “Post Title & Content,” otherwise, we found that most of the default settings in the top half of the Post Format page worked well for our content.

On the bottom half of this age, you’ll find an option to choose whether or not you use a URL shortener, and even which shortener to use.

Revive Old Posts gives you several options here, including popular shorteners such as Bit.Ly and Ow.ly as well as Google Firebase, Is.Gd, rebrand.ly, and wp_short_url.

After that, the plugin continues to prove while it’s one of the best WordPress plugins for social sharing out there by having a dedicated option for adding hashtags to your content.

Fill those in if you wish to, hit save, and you’re ready to start sharing.

7. Start Sharing

Finally, all that’s left to do is click the green ‘Start Sharing’ button on the right-hand side of the page.

After clicking this button, you’ll notice a few changes.

First, the Sharing queue that was previously empty now has a full list of all the posts that are scheduled to go out to your accounts.

Second, you’ll notice that a new box appears on the right-hand side of your page which tells you how long there is to go before Revive Old Post sends a new post to your account.

Finally, you’ll be able to check the ‘Sharing Logs’ tag to see a history of all the posts that have already been sent out to your socials.

And that really is it.
